Saugeen District Secondary School Royals achieved great things in the world of sports throughout the school year, all of which was celebrated with a year end Athletic Banquet June 14.
Banquet highlights included recognition of BAA Champions including Badminton Boys Doubles, Senior Boys Cross Country, Boys and Girls Curling, Junior Boys Rugby, Junior and Senior Boys Volleyball, Senior Girls Volleyball. The Track and Field team were also BAA Champions with members obtaining nine individual gold medals.
The Junior Boys Rugby team received gold at the CWOSSA Championships with the Senior Boys Volleyball team taking a silver. The Track and Field team received two silvers and one bronze with the Royals Gymnastics team bringing home four gold, two silver and four bronze medals at that level.
The gymnasts, track stars and diggers from the Senior Boys Volleyball teams competed at the OFSAA level with the Gymnastics Team bringing home one silver, one fifth place and three sixth place finishes; the track team obtaining OFSAA West 2 bronze medal standings, and the Senior Boys Volleyball team finished fifth in Ontario.
Athletic Letters went out to many students with each sport consisting of 3 points. Junior letters were awarded to students who received over 15 points, Senior letters went to students with 30 points or more and an Honours letter, for 60 points, was awarded to Hanna Lynch who also won the Senior Girls Athlete of the Year for the second year in a row.
Junior Athlete of the year for girls went to Josie Berry and Dan Khan with Trevor Donaldson being named the Senior Male Athlete of the Year.
