Lakeshore Recreation will host a free beginner Pickleball program for anyone 12 years or older, that wants to try the sport. It begins on Sunday, September 11, from 1 to 3 p.m., and will continue on September 18 and 25. A special Beginner Pumpkinfest Pickleball Tournament will then take place on Sunday, October 2, during the eventful weekend.

Pickleball is a rising sport in Saugeen Shores. With courts set up at Lakeshore Recreation and the Port Elgin United Church, Pickleball is a racquet sport which combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis. The sport is played on a court with the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court. The net is similar to a tennis net, but is mounted two inches lower. The game is played with a hard paddle and a polymer wiffleball.

Lakeshore Recreation’s Director of Fitness, Karen Fehr said that over the years people of all ages have been getting involved in the sport. “We had a few school groups come and give Pickleball a try this year and the kids loved it. Not only does it provide an all-over fitness for the children but it also teaches hand-eye coordination,” said Fehr.

She added that the whole family can play the game and that Lakeshore will add youth programs next summer, as there has been interest.

For the free Sunday clinics, Lakeshore Recreation will provide the racquets and balls needed to play. Beginners are asked to wear court shoes and to bring water.

Members of the Saugeen Shores Pickleball Club (SSPC) will be on hand to instruct beginners on the rules and how to play.

Interested participants should register by calling Lakeshore at 519-832-9027 or by dropping into the facility and speaking with reception. Beginners are welcome to attend all three free clinics.
