12 Jay ThompsonThe Saugeen Shores Winterhawks fell prey to the Durham Thundercats by a 3-1 margin on Friday night, December 18 in Port Elgin but it wasn't for a lack of chances.

The Hawks tested Gatlin Burt early and often but they were only able to beat the young netminder once despite firing 36 shots in his direction.

Greg Wardell was the lone Winterhawk to dent Burt's armour when he beat him midway through the first to put the Winterhawks out front.

A power play opportunity near the midway point of the second turned sour for the Hawks as Thundercat Randy Cox beat Josh Sturrock with a shorthanded goal to knot the game 1-1.

Sturrock made a number of sensational saves but an unlucky bounce led to a two-on-one and Josh Squigna fired a bullet that beat Sturrock high to the stick side.

Another odd man rush led to the same result and this time Ryan Zeggil scored as the sloppy play by the home team caught up with them.

Coach Peter Roedger pulled Sturrock in favour of an extra attacker but to no avail.
The Winterhawks will get a chance to get back in the win column on Saturday night as the Ripley Wolves come to town for an 8 p.m. start.
