saugeen shores fire

The Saugeen Shores Fire Department, Saugeen Shores Police Service and Bruce County EMS responded to a morning fire on January 14 in a residential unit of 100 Grosvenor Street in Southampton. The single unit fire was quickly contained and extinguished before it could spread to other units.

The blaze caused an estimated $40,000 in damage with minor smoke damage to surrounding units. One person was treated at the scene by Bruce County EMS for smoke inhalation.

The tenant of the unit has been charged with failing to maintain a smoke alarm as well as other offences under the Fire Code.

“Tenants need to be aware of their responsibility to comply with the fire code, including ensuring a working smoke alarm is installed,” said Rob Atkinson, Fire Prevention Officer with the Saugeen Shores Fire Department. “It is the tenant’s responsibly to notify the property owner if the alarm is not working," he added.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
