An idea for school wide connection and year long activities saw the Student Council of Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) divide the student body into house colours to compete for points throughout the school year. Orange, Red, Green and Blue were the chosen colours and in June 2019 the winning team at the end of the year will be awarded with the special “Royals Cup” for their year of accomplishments and teamwork.
The race for the Cup began with a kick-off event on September 7 when all teams came together for an assembly followed by group games that took place in the school's football field and pitted colours against one another.
Grade 12 student and Student Council Ambassador Maddie Hobson said that intra-murals would be held over the lunch break. "Next week is tug-of-war so each grade has a day they can come in at lunch to compete to get points for their team," she said, adding that the reason behind the house colours was to incorporate new ideas.
“We wanted to introduce inter-murals this year and then we wanted to add something to that and because Mr Matheson and Mr Swigger are from [Chesley District Community School (CDCS)] we’re always trying to integrate their ideas because they always had a lot of really good things going on," she said, adding that CDCS was seen as being like a family.
Hobson said they decided on a common goal to unite the school and promote school spirit and through the sport activities and school spirit days the students will have plenty of chances to gain points for their respective house.
