Saugeen Shores Councillor turned Huron-Bruce Liberal MPP candidate Don Matheson officially cut the ribbon to open his volunteer headquarters at 481 Goderich Street (south of Maple Square Mall) in Port Elgin. Matheson, surrounded by family, friends, and campaign volunteers, were on hand May 5 to celebrate the opening.
The Centre’s hours will be Monday to Friday from 12 to 4 p.m., opening seven days a week closer to the June 7 election.
Before the ribbon was officially cut, Ian Burbidge, President of the Huron-Bruce Provincial Liberal Association, touted Matheson as a “wonderful candidate” as he is a strong community member, an athlete, coach, councillor, father and educator. “He really wants to make a difference,” said Burbidge.
As Matheson took the mic he thanked those in attendance as well as his team of volunteers for keeping him going, and creating the volunteer centre. Matheson also thanked his wife Sarah for “putting up with me for the last five months and not seeing me for the next five weeks.”
Matheson stated that every election represents a choice and that the choices in this election couldn’t be any more different.
“You have a choice between a party that says the government can’t do anything and then they’ll go in and they’ll help us and they’ll set out to prove that, that they can’t do anything. And then you have us, the Liberal Party of Ontario who look out on a Ontario that we believe is exceptional. We know it isn’t perfect but we’re working to make it better every day, so on June 7, please vote Matheson,” said the candidate.
On May 24 Matheson will be attending an all candidates debate at the Plex, 600 Tomlinson Drive in Port Elgin, which will be co-hosted by the Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce and the Kincardine Chamber of Commerce. The panel of candidates will be moderated by John Divinski. As of press time, incumbent MPP for Huron-Bruce, PC Lisa Thompson, as well as NDP candidate Jan Johnstone had confirmed attendance. The Green candidate is Nicholas Wendler.
