On July 17, 2017 at 3:25 p.m. a local business owner attended the police station to turn in a suspected counterfeit US $50 bill.
The complainant advised that the $50 bill had been used on July 10 at 9:30 pm to purchase food. The male suspect paid with the US bill and received $58 Canadian in change. The suspect told the employee that he had to go see if his mom wanted a poutine. The male never returned.
On July 17, 2017, the complainant took the $50 bill to the bank as he suspected it may be counterfeit. The bank confirmed his suspicions.
Police conducted a check on CPIC and Niche for the $50 Bill serial #ML793717684A, both resulted in a positive hit.
A US $50 bill with the same serial number was reported to be used six times since May 3 2017. The $50 bills were used in:
1. Orillia on May 3 (Male suspect, Indian, early 20s left in a Toyota Minivan beige or silver, no marker obtained.)
2. Barrie on May 23 (Money received at RBC - no suspects)
3. New Tecumseth between May 23 and May 31 (Money received by TD Bank - no suspects)
4. New Tecumseth on July 5 (still under investigation)
5. Goderich on July 12 (Money received at the Bank of Montreal - no suspects)
6. Owen Sound on July 15 (Bill used at the Owen Sound Rexall)
The complainant showed police video surveillance of the male suspect. The male who paid with the $50 bill was noted to be approximately in his late teens to early 20s, tall, thin, dark hair and possibly of an East Indian decent. He was wearing a black t-shirt and Adidas style sport pants.
This person may or may not know they have passed a counterfeit bill and police would like to talk to him.
