4 560Members of the Saugeen Shores Lifesaving Club, along with Saugeen Shores Emergency Services, conducted a mock emergency drill at the Port Elgin Main Beach July 5, 2016.

Summer is approaching and with it comes fun, sun and water activities. The Town of Saugeen Shores Community Services is launching a Waterfront Safety campaign aimed at keeping beach users safe as they enjoy the beautiful beaches in Saugeen Shores has to offer.

In a May 23 media release, each year in Canada, almost 500 people die in water-related incidents. Most people drown less than 15 metres from safety. Learning how to safely enjoy the waterfront and help reduce the risk and increase enjoyment of our beaches.

Aquatic Supervisor Shanna Reid will discuss waterfront safety and tips for reducing risk. Special guest Constable Greg Fletcher will also be available to discuss his first-hand experience with the dangers of Lake Huron. Fletcher was recently presented with a Rescue Award of Merit for his actions last July. While off-duty on the beach at Gobles Grove, Fletcher assisted three teens who began to struggle in the water while floating on an inflatable toy offshore.
