Off duty officer assists with water rescue

SS Police7 fullIn the afternoon on Tuesday, July 26 Saugeen Shores Police, Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the beach near Gobles Grove in Port Elgin for a report of three swimmers in distress.

In a July 26 media release, off duty Saugeen Shores Police Constable Fletcher observed three people between 100 and 150 metres off shore unable to swim in due to high waves and windy conditions.

By the time Constable Fletcher began his swim out with the aid of a flotation device, the two brothers, both in their late teens had managed to make their way in. However their 20 year old sister was still struggling against the waves. She was holding onto an inflatable pool toy which was flopping about in the wind and hindering her ability to swim.

Police Constable Fletcher reached her and assisted her to shore to awaiting police, fire and ambulance. All refused medical attention.

This is a good time to remind motorists to pull over and stop when you see police, fire and ambulance approaching or coming up behind you with their emergency lights activated. Always remember a flashing green light means a volunteer fire fighter is trying to respond to an emergency as well. The life they could be trying to save may be someone you know.
