The Department of Community Services has been active in the promotion of cycling in Saugeen Shores and is working towards earning a Bicycle Friendly Community designation through the Share the Road Cycling Coalition’s Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) program. In preparing to submit an application, the public is invited to participate in a free bicycle-friendly community session on Wednesday, May 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Plex.
The BFC helps communities measure their bicycle-friendly efforts against an established, international set of criteria and through an assessment of their current cycling efforts.
During the free community session attendees will have an opportunity to provide input and share ideas that will help to shape a plan for cycling in Saugeen Shores.
“Anyone with an interest in cycling in Saugeen Shores is encouraged to join us for this collaborative and interactive session,” said Lisa Billing, Recreation Supervisor for the Town of Saugeen Shores. “Whether people like to ride their bike for leisure, to commute or as an experienced cyclist, their input is equally valuable in developing our plan.”
The session will be facilitated by Justin Jones, Manager of the Bicycle Friendly Community program. Jones brings a wealth of experience in working with small communities for these inspirational, interactive sessions. Pre-registration for this event is required. Participants can sign up at becomingbicyclefriendly-saugeenshores.eventbrite.ca.
Preparation for the Bicycle Friendly designation application also includes having Jones explore and evaluate the current cycling infrastructure in Saugeen Shores and a day-long workshop with municipal staff and key local stakeholders.
