Saugeen Shores Fire Department is now accepting recruit applications for youth ages 9 to 11 for the 2017 Junior Firefighter Program. The program has space for 40 participants, is free and runs every Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for six weeks beginning on Wednesday, April 26.

In a March 21 news release, the Junior Firefighter program will teach students about home fire safety initiatives, first aid as well as include hands-on demonstrations of auto extraction and pumper truck operations. Each participant will receive a t-shirt and a certificate at the end of the program.

“This will be the 28th year of the Junior Firefighter Program in Saugeen Shores. Each year the program fills up and is well received. We have a lot of fun with the kids and we’re confident they learn a lot from us,” said Saugeen Shores Fire Chief, Phil Eagleson.

Application forms are available at the bottom of this link or they can be picked up at the Saugeen Shores Fire Department, 612 Emma Street in Port Elgin.

Completed applications can be dropped off to the Fire Department during business hours or emailed to Candie Blackburn, blackburnc@saugeenshores.ca. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 14.

Fire Prevention Officer Rob Atkinson is visiting schools in Saugeen Shores this week (the week of March 20) to hand applications to youth of eligible age.

The program is made possible by Saugeen Shores Fire Department and their dedicated volunteer firefighters.
