The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks announced a special tribute to veterans planned for Remembrance Day. The Winterhawks will host the Shallow Lake Crushers on Friday, November 11 at 8:30 p.m. at The Plex in Port Elgin and will be wearing special military “camo” third jerseys during the game.
In a November 3 media release, the jerseys will only be worn once and will be auctioned off during intermissions and following the game, thanks to auctioneering services provided by Bill Walker, M.P.P. for Bruce - Grey - Owen Sound. All proceeds of the jersey auction will be donated to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 340, Port Elgin.
“This is a great opportunity for the Winterhawks to give back to those who have and continue to bravely defend our freedom,” said Winterhawks President Gord Lamont. “It’s our way of saying thank you and to help out those veterans living in our community.”
The evening is being made possible by sponsors Scott Rowland of Rowland’s Your Independent Grocer and the Royal Canadian Legion. “Without our sponsors, we would not be in a position to host this great cause,” said Lamont.
As an additional way of saying “thank you”, all veterans and current members of the Canadian Armed Forces and their spouses will be given free admission to the game.
The Winterhawks continue their season with one game this weekend, travelling to Petrolia on Friday, November 4. The Winterhawks and Squires enter the game with identical 4-1-0 records and are tied for first overall in the WOAA Sr. Hockey League.
