A multi-agency search is currently underway for a Southampton man in Lake Huron in an area near Chantry Island.

After 2 p.m. September 19, area residents reported that a Southampton man went out in a kayak without a life jacket, a neighbour saw him flip over but didn't see him come back up.

On the scene in Southampton, Saugeen Shores Police Chief Dan Rivett said that Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the Canadian Coast Guard, Saugeen Shores Police and Saugeen Shores Fire were looking for the man.

"There was a fellow go out in a kayak with no lifejacket and people that know him saw him just outside of the gap going through the long-dock and not wearing a lifejacket," Rivett said. "One moment he was upright, the next moment the kayak was overturned."

Rivett explained that a neighbour went out in a boat to retrieve the kayak and brought it back in.

Rivett said that the OPP have their search and rescue coming to do a shoreline and grid search in the hopes that he made it to shore and "we just didn't see it."
