Five hours of sweating, spinning, muscle training and a few too many burpees is what 24 participants at Fitness Funatics went through to raise $10,211, at the time of publishing, for the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation during its “FUNattack”, April 9.
On hand to support the participants was Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation Executive Director, Sally Kidson, who couldn't believe the money raised by 24 people. “It’s just phenomenal, it really is... it just makes me want to cry,” Kidson said, adding that the hospital can now buy a paediatric crash cart and an infection control tent.
The FUNattack has been going on since 2008, and each year the money raised surprises owner Shelley Greig, especially this year’s total. “I can’t believe how much 24 people could raise, knowing how hard it is to ask people for money,” said Greig to her exhausted participants who did an hour each of kickboxing, spinning, TRX suspension training, muscle pump and a bootcamp. “They’re pretty tired, but we had nutritional breaks throughout the day,” said Greig.
For friends Shirley Immonen and Lanny Bingham, participating in the event was fun and exhausting but it was nice do it with other people.
“I think what got us through it was our friends,” said Bingham, with Immonen adding that the Muscle Pump class at the beginning of the day with instructor Melanie Rodger, was the hardest.
“We just had fun and knowing that everyone had to do it as well, we’re dying, I’m dying, but it’s all for a good cause,” said Immonen following her marathon workout.
The top three fundraisers were: Michelle Policiccio with $1,765; Joni McNeice with $1,230 and Tara Crawford with $845. The top two fundraisers received gift certificates from Casual Corners for Under Armour clothing, while Crawford received a much needed gift certificate to the Scandinave Spa in Collingwood.
Instructor Melanie Rodger put the Muscle Pump class through the ringer, during the first hour of the FUNattack, April 9.
