Norm Smits of Norm's Fast Lube and Auto Detailing celebrated his first year in business with a customer appreciation day on October 17, with approximately 50 people coming out.
Smits bought the business at the Tibor's Auto Mall on Highway 21, Port Elgin, previously known as Cruisers Fast Lube, from Mark Kraemer, changing the name and adding auto detailing. Smits said he worked for Kraemer for four years before the opportunity came to purchase the business.
“Ironically we actually set a brand new record today,” he said. “Eleven oil changes between 9am and 1pm.” He said his previous record was nine. “I beat it by two today, of all days.”
Food at the event was provided by Queen's Bar & Grill with live music from Michael Nyman, who entertained in the oil change bay.
Everyone who has had an oil change at Norm's over the past year was put into a draw for a complete interior and exterior auto detailing. Cliff Hare of Port Elgin was the lucky winner.
Smits thanked everyone for coming. “I really appreciate you making the effort to come and share this with us,” he said. “I can't believe it's been a year already. It just seems to have flown by.” He gave praise to his girlfriend Liz Yurkiw who works on the auto detailing. “I can't thank her enough for what she's done,” he said.
Mayor Mike Smith congratulated Smits. “I was here a year ago when you started and I thank you for the invitation and I'll hopefully be back next year for your second anniversary event...you're in a great community,” said Smith.
