The Festival Winds Symphonic Band, conducted by David Leach, took centre stage during a performance at the Southampton Coliseum Annex on July 27. The performance highlighted the talent that is fostered and showcased at the week-long Summer Music camp, which this year is celebrating 30 years.

Musician and camp Artistic Director Ridley Gilmore welcomed the crowd to the concert and spoke highly of Conductor David Leach. “I will never forget the look on your faces after the first rehearsal,” said Gilmore looking back five years. “I went to David, I said, ‘You know, they really feel you are challenging them,’ and he said... ‘just trust me.’”

Leach then entered the stage and led the band in the playing of O’ Canada.

Former Summer Music Chair and now President, Marg Funston, spoke to the audience of music lovers with news of Summer Music’s having become an incorporated charity. “We are now the Summer Music Society... you will see this name around in the future but we are the same group,” she said. “Our mission remains the same, to provide the best quality music education available through a broad range of musical programs, in a safe and inclusive environment.”

Funston noted that donations made will be met with a tax receipt and went onto acknowledge the work that goes on behind the scenes at Summer Music and invited everyone who has a hand in the music program to stand up for a round of applause. “I think you’ll be astounded by the number of people that are involved,” said Funston as band conductors and music teachers standing in the crowd, with many included in the Festival Winds band.

Leach spoke of the night’s performance, saying he wanted to showcase what makes Canada great and noted the premier of an original composition that would be performed.
