Skating fans were treated to a display of numerous and colourful routines from Saugeen Shores Skating Club's (SSSC) PreSTAR, Junior and Senior skaters April 13 as the club held #GottaSkate!, its end of season carnival, at the Plex in Port Elgin.
SSSC Executive Julie Pilger said that it had been several years since the club had performed an end of season show like this but were hoping now to continue producing one every other year.
Pilger said that the skaters had been practising “all new routines” for the last six weeks for the carnival. “They really put the show together fairly quickly,” she said.
Club President Ken Rhyno said that the skating carnival featured a variety of music from the 1950s to modern day and explained that the club's coaches had chosen the music and choreographed the routines with the skaters. “Our club is very lucky to have a talented group of coaches,” he said. “These coaches love the sport and they love our skaters.”
Rhyno also praised the skaters. “They all work very, very hard to achieve the goals that they set through the year and they're very supportive of each other, both on and off the ice,” he said.
With admission by donation, the show featured solo, pair, small group and production numbers. All skaters joined together for a finale performance to a medley of Queen songs, including Somebody to Love, Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Bohemian Rhapsody, before coming together on the ice to wave at the audience with shouts of "Saugeen Shores!"
