The rust that was evident in last week's home opener was definitely shaken off as the Winterhawks exploded for an 11-0 shutout of the once mighty Elora Rocks on Friday night.

The Rocks showed up with only nine skaters and the Winterhawks showed no mercy as they notched their first win of the young season.

There were lots of positives to take away from this one most noticeably the impressive debut of newly-signed Theo Peckham who played for parts of six seasons with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers.

The formidable defenceman who is listed at 6'2" and 240 lbs laid out a couple of Elora players with punishing hits and was a force to be reckoned with all night.

The Hawks also got an impressive display between the pipes from Jeff Flagler who earned the shutout and Wismer House player of the game honours.

Curtis Johnston opened the scoring less than 30 seconds in with assists going to Alex Penner and Nick Quaid.

Brent MacDermid followed that up 3 minutes later with assists from Quaid and Greg Thede.

Elora goalie Gary Walser kept the margin at 2-0 till midway through the second when Jay Thomson converted a tremendous feed from James McHaig to make it 3-0.

A minute later Alex Penner blasted his first of the game as he took a pass from Andy Mitchell and rifled it high to the glove side past Walser.

Brent MacDermid scored his second of the game with assists by Trent Hawke and Blake Underwood to make it 5-0.

Hawke scored with just over a minute left in the second on a knuckler and Bryan Kazarian, who looked rejuvenated made a great move on the defence and slipped it past Walser to make it 6-0.

Penner scored his second of the night less than a minute into the third with assists going to Mitchell and Andy Fracz and then notched the hat trick three minutes later to widen the margin.

McHaig scored followed by MacDermid for the hat trick to round out the scoring as an exhausted Elora team simply could not contain the onslaught from the Winterhawks who improved their record to 1-1 with the win.

The Hawks hit the road Saturday night for a date with the Shelburne Muskies. The next home game is November 11 when the Shallow Lake Crushers come to town.
