A month of round robin play at the Southampton Tennis Club culminated into a day of outstanding tennis and sportsmanship at the club’s annual Cups Day, August 27.
The end of summer tournament featured a full day of match-ups that had club members young and old excitedly enjoying the sport that brought together the local tennis community.
Southampton Tennis Club Board Chair, Kathy Festeryga said the games that were played on Cups Day were the top match-ups from round robin play that had been held throughout the month of August. She explained there were over 40 categories involved with a mix of gender, age and even familial match-ups such as sister versus sister, grandparent versus grandchild, and so on.
“I think those traditions are what appeal to people,” said Festeryga, who won her Junior Vets Mixed Doubles game with partner, Fred Cox.
She surmised that traditions are what keep the summer club strong with 1,200 members. Although the club uses and updates their website regularly, there is not an online booking system and Festeryga likes it that way. “This sort of forces people to come to the club and be social and see friends. And you always run into someone you know. It’s the little traditions that keep people coming back with their kids and grandchildren.
Awards were presented following the final games and in a salute to those who demonstrated the club’s core values, special awards for courtesy, improvement, sportsmanship and excellence in teaching were presented.
