Andy Fracz scored two goals as the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks capped off a much-needed perfect weekend with a 6-1 win over the Lucknow Lancers Saturday night.
Dave Mercer kicked off the scoring for the Winterhawks at 5:12 of the 1st period, beating Lucknow goaltender Ben Dorscht for his first goal of the season, with Chris King getting the assist.
Curtis Johnston extended the lead to 2-0 about five minutes later on a feed from Jay Thomson.
Josh Sturrock was able to hold off the Lucknow attack for the remainder of the period, which included a Lancers 5-on-3 powerplay advantage.
The physical play picked up in the 2nd period and with the Winterhawks shorthanded, Brett Binning cut the lead to 2-1 with a powerplay goal at 11:17 of the 2nd.
The physical tone of the game even took its toll on the officiating crew, as the referee departed the game due to injury after the 2nd period.
The Winterhawks would take control in the 3rd period, with Fracz picking up his first of the game just shy of the four minute mark of the period, beating Dorscht to make it 3-1 for the Winterhawks.
About two minutes later, a Jacob Brown blast from the point was tipped home by Alex Penner, extending the lead to 4-1, chasing Dorscht from the Lucknow net.
The Winterhawks showed no mercy on Lucknow back-up Blake Smith, scoring on the netminder 25 seconds after he entered the game, with Trevor Smith scoring to make it 5-1, with an assist to Fracz and Blake Underwood.
Fracz wrapped up the scoring on the powerplay at 12:30 of the 3rd period, making it a 6-1 final for the Winterhawks.
Back-to-back wins for the Winterhawks on the weekend boosts their record to 3-4-0 on the season.
The Winterhawks will play their fifth straight game on the road next Saturday, November 14th when they head to Ripley to face the Wolves at 7:30 p.m.
