The day started with thunder and heavy rain in the early morning of Thursday, August 20 but by the 1pm Shotgun Start the weather had brightened up for the 24th Saugeen Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Charity Golf Classic held at Saugeen Golf Club.
Saugeen Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Chair, Ann Veyvara-Divinski said that there were 114 names listed to play at the bi-annual event.
“It's a big fundraiser,” she said. Proceeds from this year's event will go towards the Southampton hospital's campaign for the new ER and Laboratory for which construction is to start this coming Spring.
“There's some different things going on and off the holes such as $5 will get you $10,” explained Veyvara-Divinski. “Basically you put down $5 that you'll get it on the green and if you get it on the green you get $10 back. But if you don't we keep the $5.”
Other events such as Putterama, a putting contest where $5 got you three balls and the highest score won 50 percent of the money collected, a Hole in One prize of $7,000 sponsored by Hills Insurance, closest to the pin sponsored by Peninsula Ford Lincoln and a 50/50 ball toss all complimented the days 18 holes of golf.
Dinner was being held at 6:30pm with Ann Veyvara-Divinski as the Master of Ceremonies while Pat O'Connor officiated the live auction, which included items such as Toronto Maple Leaf tickets, a Cobble Beach pass and a model of the Bluenose ship. In excess of $22,000 was raised for the auxiliary and hospital.
