The Saugeen River Rear Range Light on South Rankin Street has recently undergone a much needed restoration thanks to the Marine Heritage Society.
The functioning light is one of three historic light stations owned by the Town of Saugeen Shores and works in conjunction with the Saugeen River Front Range on the north pier at the Southampton Harbour.
In preparation for the restoration and in cooperation with the Town of Saugeen Shores, work got underway in the spring of 2024 with the painting of thousands of cedar shingles.
A recent media release from the Marine Heritage Society said it took 342 volunteer hours to paint the shingles.
"On September 16, the volunteers started under the guidance of Scott Good of Good Impressions to remove the old damaged cedar shingles to uncover more damaged wood than was visible from inside," read the release, adding that this discovery will extend the project by a few days.
"The Society is very fortunate to have our local community help with financial donations for many aspects of the project including equipment and expertise," the release said.
The Front Range was restored in 2022, also through donations by individuals and businesses. For information on donations or to contribute to the project, visit marine-heritage-society.squarespace.com/donate.
All told volunteers spent 342 hours painting thousands of cedar shingles front and back for the restoration.
