Saugeen Shores announced July 3 that a Port Elgin Street will be dedicated to Duncan Hawthorne, Bruce Power President and CEO from 2001 and 2016.

The dedication aims to honour Hawthorne's contributions in shaping the development of Saugeen Shores and the region.

Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau said that under Hawthorne's leadership, "Bruce Power began its journey to becoming the world-leading nuclear facility we know today," all while supporting the growth and development of the region.

"Saugeen Shores is proud to name one of the municipality’s streets in honour of this man who has given, and continues to give, so much to our community," Charbonneau said.

"Duncan and his wife Lesley remain consistent supporters of health care in Saugeen Shores with a personal donation of $20,000 in 2022 for the CT Scanner at Saugeen Memorial Hospital," a July 3 media release said, adding that Hawthorne was also a regular at the Jeff Preston Celebrity Golf Tournament in support of Muscular Dystrophy research.

During his time with Bruce Power, Hawthorne reached an agreement with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to advance a long-term investment program for Bruce Power which saw the start of refurbishment projects, secured the site's operation until 2064, added tens of thousands of jobs and injected billions into the Ontario economy.

By the time Hawthorne left in 2016, Bruce Power had achieved record output for the site, providing over 30 percent of Ontario's electricity.
