Ceasefire Grey Bruce is once again hosting a documentary screening and open discussion at the Port Elgin United Church June 5.

The family friendly event 'Learning About Palestine' will feature the documentary '1948: Creation & Catastrophe' by Documentary Filmmaker Andy Trimlett and California State University Professor of Media Studies Ahlam Muhtaseb.

The award winning documentary features first hand accounts of Palestinians and Israelis, renowned historians and highlights military orders, intelligence documents and over 200 archival photographs and film clips.

"It tells the story of the establishment of Israel as seen through the eyes of the people who lived it," reads a synopsis from Collective Eye Films.

"Our goal is to provide a history on Palestine from the past 100 years while placing this history in the context of Indigenous land rights in Canada," said Jessica Daneluk, event organizer with Ceasefire Grey Bruce, in an email to Saugeen Shores Hub.

Similar to their April 27 event, also held at the Port Elgin United Church, Ceasefire Grey Bruce's June 5 event is free to attend and in addition to the documentary, will also feature a short presentation, an open discussion with a local Gazan and authentic Palestinian cuisine.

"While this conflict can feel far away and complicated, by beginning to look at our own history of Indigenous land rights, we can begin to understand this occupation as well as our own communities right here better," Daneluk added.

The Port Elgin event is set to take place Wednesday evening, June 5 at the Port Elgin United Church, 840 Bruce Street, from 6pm to 8pm.

A second similar event will be held at the Owen Sound Library, 824 1st Avenue West on July 3 from 6pm to 8pm.
