Violence Prevention Grey Bruce (VPGB) has expressed its condolences to the family, friends, and community of the woman whose body was found in Northern Bruce Peninsula on Tuesday. In a VPGB media release, her death, and every femicide, is a reminder that gender-based violence continues to be a problem in Ontario as well as here in Grey and Bruce.

Grey Bruce OPP reported that on October 10, 2021 officers located the body of a deceased woman in a wooded area near Scrugg Lake. As of Thursday, the person's identity was still under investigation and officers believed it to be an isolated incident.

Already in 2021, more than 40 women have been murdered in Ontario, said the media release from VPGB. The vast majority of this violence is perpetrated by men. These murders, and all incidents of violence against women, are preventable but the pandemic has increased the risk factors and made prevention more difficult.

Women and girls are at increased risk of violence in isolated communities where there are fewer social supports and where access to services are limited by transportation or access to technology. The pandemic has also increased overall risk factors connected to unemployment, social isolation, stress, and substance use.

Despite these increased risks, shame and stigma continue to create silence around the issue. There is also a persistent belief that violence and abuse within relationships are private matters. They are not. Every act of violence, and especially murders, impact more than only the victim; they impact on neighbours, friends, family, and the community at large. Every single one of us have a role to play in addressing this type of violence. Staying silent about violence allows it to continue.

As neighbours, friends, and family, the public at large can also support survivors of violence and encourage perpetrators to change their behaviour.

Gender based violence is a real and deadly issue. It is not something that only happens to certain people or in distant communities. This latest murder is a reminder that we in Grey Bruce need to continue to work to keep everyone safe.
