The Southampton Cultural Heritage Conservancy (SCHC) welcomes news that the National Trust for Canada has added the former Anglican Rectory at 254 High Street in Southampton to its list of Canada's Top 10 Endangered Places for 2019.
The National Trust of Canada is a charitable organization that aims to inspire action for buildings it deems to have heritage value with its first list published in 2005.
In an SCHC media release, the inclusion of the former rectory highlights the importance of the building to Southampton's story and indicates that it is deserving of recognition.
"The former Anglican Rectory is significant, not only for its quality craftsmanship and fine Queen Anne and Gothic Revival architecture, but also for its prominent location at the historic intersection of Victoria and High Streets," said SCHC Director Sheila Latham, PhD.
The rectory sits at the entrance to Fairy Lake where it and three Victorian churches face each other.
"We hope that this attention by the National Trust for Canada amplifies and validates the concerns expressed by members of SCHC and by many others," said Latham.
The SCHC is continuing with a multi-pronged approach including deputations, an application to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice scheduled for August 8 and a peaceful protest.
A Rectory Rally is planned at the site for Sunday, June 30 and is set to take place between 8 and 11 a.m.
Other buildings added the Top 10 2019 list include two churches, one in Battleford, Saskatchewan and one in Halifax, Nova Scotia; Birtle Residential School in Birtle, Manitoba; Canada's only monumental painted panorama in Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, Quebec; and an entire downtown core and waterfront in Grand Banks, Newfoundland and Labrador.
