On May 3 in the front lobby of Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) in Port Elgin, members of the Student Advisory Council (SAC) gathered to announce their latest green initiative project. Their venture is two-fold in that it will divert household waste otherwise destined for the landfill as well as raise money for the Paediatric Unit at the Owen Sound Regional Hospital with an aim to benefit the environment as well as health care in the region.

The students, along with the Ontario Electronics Stewardship (OES) have organized a collection of electronic waste and end-of-use clothing in the back corner of the school parking lot. The collection will take place from Thursday, May 9 to Friday, May 24.

OES offers a monetary donation to the chosen charity, the amount of which is based on the total weight of the items collected. Money raised will help the SDSS SAC in their goal to purchase two blood oxygen monitors for the regional Paediatric Unit.

Anyone who is interested in donating but is unable to deliver the items themselves, a pickup service has been scheduled for Saturday, May 11 from 9 to 11 a.m. Call the school at 519-832-2091 extension 696 to make an appointment.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story indicated that the fundraiser was going in support of the Saugeen Memorial Hospital Foundation when in fact it is going to support the Owen Sound Regional Hospital.
