The Town of Saugeen Shores continues to use the 2013 Waterfront Master Plan (WMP) to guide their annual budget submissions and plan their work.
Director of Community Services Jayne Jagelewski said that following the completion of the new Beach House washrooms this summer, which was a priority of the plan, work continued with improved trail connections and rehabilitation within North Shore Park.
This work includes installation of a new foot and cycle bridge across the seasonal creek and, in addition, towards the south end of Port Elgin’s Main Beach a new promenade extension is in progress with an interlocking brick beautification of the former pump house foundation.
Where the brick promenade ends a wooden style connection continues to the foundation at the foot of Izzard Street. Wood was chosen because of rising water levels.
Michael Scott Landscaping and Design from Orillia is completing the work. "We love this town and working here," said work crew Foreman Dwayne Campbell. The company has also completed main street interlocking brick maintenance in Port Elgin over the past two springs. "We hope to be completed by late November, weather permitting," Campbell added.
"Our work includes laying all new electrical conduit and light standards," he said.
Jagelewski said the Town is forecasting total expenses for the trail improvements to be $670,000 with more work planned for 2019 including a complete reconstruction of Harbour Street from Izzard to the pumping station at the foot of Green Street for a 2018 budget estimate of $560,000.
Details of trail improvements can be found on pages 85 and 86 of the Waterfront Master Plan.
