Over $22,000 and counting for Women's House Walk a Mile event

Walkers gathered at the Queen's Bar and Grill in Port Elgin to don their shoes and find a placard before heading out on their one mile walk.

Funds raised for the Women’s House Serving Bruce and Grey’s (WHSBG) annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event held on Sunday, May 27 has reached $22,370 and is still rising.

On June 4, a spokesperson for WHSBG reported that over 50 men took part in this year's event, donning red high heeled shoes and walking a mile to take a stand against gender based violence.

Trophies were given to the top team and top individual pledges as follows:

1st Place Individual - Chris Turcotte
2nd Place Individual - Don Matheson
3rd Place Individual - Chris Wood

1st Place Team - Bruce Power
2nd Place Team - OldTimers Hockey Team
3rd Place Team - Lucknow Kinsmen

Women’s House operates a shelter for abused women and their children, a transition program that supports women in transitioning back to the community from the shelter, a second stage housing program that provides women with one year of rent geared to income, an outreach counselling program, a child witness counselling program, and a sexual assault services program.

Last year, Women’s House supported 596 women, 167 children, and responded to 11,390 crisis and support calls. Monies raised from Walk a Mile in Her Shoes help to ensure that the current levels of service provided are maintained in the community free of charge.
