Salmon find a new home with a little help from their friends

Sisters and Northport students Lexi and Tori made sure their fish made it safely into the water May 12.

A perfect Spring day saw a bevy of Northport Elementary School students release their smolts (young salmon) at the Saugeen River Access Point #13, under Thede Bridge, May 12.

The students had been caring for the young fish which were provided by the Lake Huron Fishing Club (LHFC), since last Fall.

Lake Huron Fishing Club member Brian King (right) gathered the fish that had been being cared for at Northport Elementary School since last Fall and brought them to the Saugeen River where plenty of Northport students were happy to bring them to the water.

Northport students and some helpful parents put on their wellies and carefully moved the young salmon to the Saugeen River.
