The Saugeen Shores Recreation Centre and Pool Now (SSRAP Now) committee is hoping for a sea of orange to wash through Port Elgin on Monday, May 14 in support of a new recreational aquatic facility in Saugeen Shores.

The organized march will start at the Giant Tiger Plaza (216 Goderich Street) in Port Elgin at 5:30 p.m. and head north up Goderich Street to The Plex (600 Tomlinson Drive) with an aim to illustrate to Saugeen Shores Council how much support there is within the community for a new aquatic facility, said Committee member Karen Gill.

In addition to orange ribbons that can be worn as a show support and are available at various businesses in Saugeen Shores, Gill said that orange poofs are also available at Gord's Imprints & Design (685 Goderich St.) and at the Dr Earl Health Centre (786 Goderich St.) in Port Elgin.

“Anybody that wants to pick one up and put them on their house are more than welcome to and what we're asking is if you're really into wanting this pool we need an hour to do the walk with us just for the numbers,” said Gill, adding that not everyone will be expected to walk the full distance and people can join at various locations en route including Ralph's Hi-Way Shopette, Coulter Parkette, Dr Earl Health Centre, and Port Elgin Home Hardware.

“At [the Plex] parking lot we'll see the crowds, address the crowds, thanks for their support and just a show of numbers,” said Gill adding that they had also invited a couple of Saugeen Shores councillors to talk. “What we really want to do is show our young people that we want the pool and we hope it's for the next generation.”
