After a stormy May 4 came a calm and, we can only hope, winds of change that finally ushered in the real growing season. Beginning as early as 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, now in its ninth season, local rite of spring tradition “Trees for Saugeen” returned to the 6th Concession Saugeen Shores Public Works yard.

The annual Saugeen Shores tree sale begins in January of each year with species selection. Tracy and Gerry Lambert of Trees for Saugeen, a branch of SauGREEN for the Environment Inc. worked with JD Everest to pick the trees, with Town staff coordinating the annual event and Bruce Power, a perennial partner.

Led by Peter Knechtel, Town Operations Manager, and with the help from many Town staff, this year’s efforts saw a 10 percent increase over last year’s numbers for a total of 283.

Tracy beamed as she said that Saugeen Shores had all four aspects of what makes a community. “With a corporate sponsor, municipality buy in, a local supplier and a local environmental not for profit group including a youth organization,” she said.

A two page installation and planting guide was provided with each of these trees estimated to be discounted greater than half of the regular cost.

Tracy added that nature had provided a different year and the trees were extra fresh as there was still frost below them when they were picked up at the tree farm.
