cycle 560Saugeen Shores has received an Honourable Mention as a bicycle-friendly community through Share the Road’s Bicycle Friendly Community Program.

In 2017 Saugeen Shores embarked on a journey to get more people on bicycles, position Saugeen Shores as a desired cycling destination and become a designated bicycle-friendly community. This included the launch of the Bruce County-Southwest Ontario by Bike Network, development of a bicycle-friendly community work plan, new bike racks and repair stations, community events and the extension of the Great Lakes Waterfront Trail through Saugeen Shores.

These efforts, in addition to the community’s strong foundation of trails and support for cycling, cumulated with the submission of a bicycle friendly community application last October.

“We are thrilled to receive an honourable mention. This announcement recognizes the significant work that has been happening with trails and cycling in Saugeen Shores over the last two decades,” said Lisa Billing, Recreation Supervisor for the Town of Saugeen Shores.

As plans get underway for 2018, the Town of Saugeen Shores, along with community stakeholders are looking forward to continued efforts around cycling.

“Together with our partners, Town staff are planning to implement a number of recommendations from the work plan developed by the experts at Share the Road, and are looking forward to reapplying for designation in the future,” added Billing.
