Saugeen Shores’ very own Emma Schuster, age 15, took first place at Bruce Telecom’s Harvest Star Search competition September 30, part of the Port Elgin Pumpkinfest weekend.
Anyone under the age of 19 was invited to step on stage and showcase all their musical talents; from playing the violin, to singing their very own songs. Participants were asked to perform two pieces, one for each round, with three individuals moving on to the third and final round where they had their final performance.
All of the contestants were truly brilliant though, with the youngest performer being Callie Leifso who was only 7 years old yet had the courage to get up in front of everyone and show us what she can do. As well as contestant Tesna Crewson, just 10 years old, who won third place at the Harvest Star Search in 2015.
Unfortunately the judges could only pick three finalists for the final round. It was a difficult decision to make but in the end Lauren Irwin, age 14; Alexis Hockridge, age 12; and Emma Schuster made it through. Each had performances that wowed the crowd and judges Marlene Borsella, Erin Miley-Patey, and Christine Mensher couldn't believe the skill these girls had, their performances all causing goosebumps for them and the audience.
After some discussion, third place went to Irwin, second to Hockridge, and first place was awarded to Schuster for her beautiful rendition of Colors by Halsey which was accompanied by acoustic guitar.
It was a close one for all contestants but in the end everyone was a winner, getting to display their beautiful singing and playing that they will hopefully show to many more in the future inspiring other talented people to do the same.
Emma Shuster was the winner of this year’s Harvest Star Search competition, singing her heart out in the first round.
Lauren Irwin was a two-time third place winner at the annual competition and raised hairs with her performance.
Second place winner Alexis Hockridge showed off her vocal skills while singing Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood.
