To coincide with Bruce County’s 150th celebrations, municipalities across the county are laying out the welcome mat for Doors Open and Saugeen Shores is no exception, giving attendees an exclusive look at 11 local highlights June 10 and 11.
With three private homes to tour there are also historical highlights such as the Southampton Town Hall, the former Southampton Public School, now Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre; the Back Range Light, the Port Elgin Library, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Dunblane Church and the Port Elgin Fish Hatchery.
During the May 8 Committee of Whole, Municipal Heritage Committee member Joyce Johnston informed councillors of the event alongside Anne Marie Collins from the County of Bruce. The two reported that over 50 sites across the county will be opening their doors on June 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on June 11 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Johnston said the Municipal Heritage Committee is working with Marine Heritage Society and the Chantry Island Cham-bettes and that beyond the tour of properties there were also points of interest including the flag pole at the end of High Street, Nodwell Park, Forsyth House, Pioneer Park and Pioneer Cemetery.
“This sounds really exciting,” said Councillor Dave Myette. “I’m certainly excited to see a couple of places that you’ve got on your list.” The councillor noted that he is the manager and license holder at the Fish Hatchery on Upper Avenue and that currently they have between 90,000 and 100,000 salmon that are to be released before the Doors Open event.
“The hatchery will be in a laid-off state at that point. If you wanted to, we might be able to hold some fish over for a couple of weeks...our license allows us to do that, so if you’d like to us to keep some swimmers in there then we can probably arrange to do that,” said Myette.
Ann Marie Collins seemed pleased with the idea and asked to continue the discussion “offline.” Collins said that the 50 sites on the Bruce County Doors Open list can be found online at brucecounty150.ca.
