The Chantry Island Cham-bettes celebrated hard work and time served and crowned a deserving Cham-bette of the Year during their May meeting and award ceremony May 2 at the Southampton Golf & Country Club. Cham-bette Martha Bennett was a multiple award winner. Not only did Bennett receive an award for perfect attendance but she was also named Cham-bette of the Year for her work throughout 2016 and for coordinating the Cham-bette’s Christmas Home Tour that raised $18,755.
Upon winning, Bennett said that she was at a “loss for words” to which a crowd member replied “so are we”, which was followed by raucous laughter. Bennett went onto say that she wasn’t expecting the award and that it was an honour.
Outgoing Cham-bette President Sandy Howcroft reminisced about the money making activities that went on during the 2016 year, as well as the events that Cham-bettes volunteered their time to be a part of such as the Octogenarian luncheons, Legion dinners, their participation in the Lip-Sync Battle, Santa Claus parades and cardboard boat race at the Marine Heritage Festival.
Howcroft went on to say that over the past year the Cham-bettes raised roughly $26,293 from a variety of community events. Their Spring Garage Sale raised approximately $1,900 with their annual Christmas Garage Sale bringing in $1,375. Their Canada Day popcorn sales made $500, Southampton Shindig Door $800, Chantry Island Sleepover $1,500, Ghouls Night Out $1,300, Christmas Home Tour $18,755. The Cham-bettes also created Christmas cards which raised $136.
Other awards given out at the May 2 event were for Perfect Attendance, followed by 5, 10, 25 Years of Service Awards.

Mary Ellen Renaud was presented with a gift and recognized for her 25 years of service as a Chantry Island Cham-bette May 2.
