On behalf of the Grey Bruce Chinese Heritage & Culture Association, a travelling display on the history of Chinese in Grey Bruce has been visiting communities throughout the two counties. The tour got underway in April of this year with Saugeen Shores dates beginning in mid May.

In December 2016, the Association received a Community Foundation Canada 150 matching grant for its project “Home in a Distant Land.” The project is unprecedented and the goal is to foster a stronger sense of belonging in residents of Chinese heritage and a greater appreciation of cultural diversity in communities throughout Grey and Bruce.

In addition to the travelling display, workshops are being offered at elementary schools in the region to provide specific age-appropriate access to the rich cultural heritage.

“Home in a Distant Land” will be on display at the Port Elgin Library from May 13 to May 25 with a public presentation taking place on Sunday, May 28. A presentation is also planned for Monday, May 15 at Northport Elementary School.

The display will return to Saugeen Shores in the fall where it will be at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre from September 23 to October 12. Additional school dates to be announced.
