Local, regional and Canadian heritage was on display this week at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre (BCM&CC) for G.C. Huston’s 6th annual Local Heritage Fair. Five winners have been selected to move on to the regional fair held held at Owen Sound’s Grey Roots Museum & Archives April 20.

The Local Heritage Fair is a partnership between the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre and G.C. Huston Public School with students in Grades 5 through 8 being asked to create a project pertaining to Canadian heritage.

The topic can be anything from a company, person, or place; to a significant landmark or object. The project included a combination of posters, props and slideshows, along with a 10 minute oral presentation.

Students were marked on a number of criteria, including originality and relevance. A total of 25 entries were on display by students with all eligible grades represented and a range in topics from Cradleboards to the Toronto Maple Leafs to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Vimy Ridge.

On the evening of March 2, family members and friends supported the students’ efforts by examining the projects on display at the Local Heritage Fair Open House. Volunteer adjudicators evaluated the projects and commented on the breadth and variety of the topics.

Winners who will be moving onto the regional fair are:

Sarah Poole (Grade 6, Mr. Alexander): “Lights Along the Way (Bruce County Lighthouses)”
Mackenzie Roote (Grade 7, Mr. Alexander): “Pow Wow Dancing”
Grace Rooyakkers (Grade 5, Mrs. England): “Lucy Maud Montgomery”
Zoe Shaves (Grade 8, Ms. Lake): “Winnie the Pooh”
