Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) Grade 11 art students were given an opportunity to help promote an event aimed to honour victims of a mass shooting 27 years ago as well as educate about the sexual climate in society today.

The Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Southport is holding a vigil on Tuesday, December 6 in honour of the 14 victims of Montreal's l’École Polytechnique shooting, all of whom were female, on the same day in 1989.

Pat Sanagan, CFUW Southport, said art teacher Janice Coleman Sanagan works with her students to not only build skills but to look at social issues from a broad perspective and invited Pat to her class to discuss sexism, sexual harrassment as well as assault in the media, public institutions and businesses.

“She built the opportunity to promote the Vigil into a curriculum section on sketching,” said Pat.

Among the students who took part in the promotion were artists Marissa Kahgee, Caprice Ricks, Olivia Lariviere and Victoria Lariviere. Their posters are below.
