The dates are set for two community events that will certainly bring a buzz to Saugeen Shores. On Saturday, August 13, is the Southampton Summer Shindig Festival, an event that will bring colour to the Southampton community, pending official approval by Council. It will feature a Color Dash, a 5k run around Southampton, with 50 percent of the funds raised going to G.C. Huston.
The Southampton Shindig will also have a 500’ water slide located on Victoria Street, starting at the water tower and sliding past High Street; as well as a Fish Fry and Dance.
The Festival was presented to council on April 25, with requested road closures at the following locations:
Clarendon Street – Victoria Street to Carlisle Street from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Grenville Street – Clarendon Street to Spence Street from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Spence Street – Grey Street to Anglesia Street from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Victoria Street – Palmerston Street to Union Lane from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
High Street – Albert Street to Grey Street from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Councillor Don Matheson declared a pecuniary interest as the organizer of the Southampton Shindig and stepped outside of Council Chambers as councillors spoke on the subject during the Committee of a Whole. The popularity of last year’s Shindig, held at the Southampton Coliseum, had Matheson wanting to make this year’s Shindig an all-day event.
“When the opportunity came to bring in the Color Dash, which has never been in small town Ontario, I jumped at it, and they were eager to come here... I think it will be a great event, and bring a lot of people from surrounding municipalities,” Matheson said, after the Committee of a Whole meeting.
The proposed Shindig was met with positive response, with Councillor Cheryl Grace and Vice Deputy Mayor Diane Huber requesting visible signage and access to the Southampton Memorial Hospital, during the event.
Another event sure to create a buzz is The Feast. The Port Elgin BIA Farm to Table Dinner and Dance is set for Friday, August 12, with proceeds going to the Port Elgin Farmers’ Market. Port Elgin BIA President, Jeff Carver previously stating that the event, “will put downtown Port Elgin and our Famers' Market on the map.”
The road closure of Green Street, Goderich to Waterloo was also approved, from 3 p.m. until 12 a.m., for the dinner and dance.
