In less than a month, Canadians across the country will take part in Earth Day, April 20 and the Eco Explorers program at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre (BCM&CC) is no exception. Eco Explorers was designed to inspire children to become life-long advocates and environmental stewards through nature play and connection, and to make every day “Earth Day”.
The program offers those aged 7 to 12 the opportunity to develop neighbourhood stewardship projects while gaining a better appreciation of the importance of environmental awareness.
On April 3 and May 1, Museum Eco Explorers will take part in different hands-on environmental programs.
On April 3, Explorers will “dive” into aquatic life and the preservation of it, while staying dry. From fish and water bugs to plants and everything in between, they’ll become closely acquainted with these interesting groups and species.
On May 1, Explorers will be treated to a visit from “Hands on Exotics” featuring ten different animals. They’ll come face to face with a lemur, a parrot, a lizard and many others, and appreciate the animals around us, along with many that have become endangered.
The BCM&CC is also offering Eco Explorers an opportunity to travel to Scenic Caves Nature Adventures. On Friday, June 3, those registered will travel by bus for a full-day trip, leaving the Museum at 8 a.m. and returning at 5 p.m. Participants will need outdoor clothes and a packed lunch as they will be caving and exploring. Non-Eco Explorers youth ages 7-12 are invited to sign up for this trip as well, though space is limited, with pre-registration and prepayment required.
