Newcomers set to arrive in Saugeen Shores

syria children speak from 005After weeks of waiting, and massive effort from the community, the Saugeen Shores Refugee Fund is ready to welcome their sponsored family to Port Elgin.

The newcomers, a family of 14 from Syria, are set to arrive this weekend.

A small group of volunteers from the Saugeen Shores Refugee Fund will welcome the family in Toronto and travel with them back to Port Elgin with help from Grey Bruce Airbus, who is generously donating their services.

Transitioning to the new way of life will surely be challenging for the newcomers. As the family settles in and gets accustomed to their new home, the community is asked to respect their privacy. Saugeen Shores Refugee Fund asks that you please do not contact them independently.

With assistance from Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and shared sponsorship with the Canadian Government, the Saugeen Shores Refugee Fund will support the newcomers for their first 12 months in the community with the funds that have been raised.

Launched in October, the Saugeen Shores Refugee Fund has raised more than $69,000 toward the goal of resettling refugee families in need.

Donations are still welcome. Click here to donate.
