Bruce Power gives to two initiatives that will positively impact our region:
Bruce County Historial Society
Bruce Power has donated $25,000 to the Bruce County Historical Society (BCHS) to support the production of a documentary on the history of the county.
The production, which will be complete in time for Canada and Bruce County’s 150th anniversary celebrations in 2017, will be a high-quality, educational documentary series distributed with a course guide to all schools in the county. Members of the BCHS are also hoping to have it broadcast on TVO, said Ross Lamont, head of the steering committee responsible for the documentary.
“The 150th anniversary of Bruce County led to us wanting to document the legacy and history of the county for future generations to both be aware of, and enjoy,” Lamont said. “The support and involvement of the community is critical to the success of this documentary about Bruce County’s heritage, and the Bruce County Historical Society thanks Bruce Power for its generous contribution to the project.”
James Scongack, Bruce Power’s Vice President of Corporate Affairs, said the company finds it important to support generational projects such as the documentary of Bruce County.
“Bruce Power is proud to play such a prominent role in the history of Bruce County, and that’s why we feel it’s important to support the Bruce County Historical Society in this endeavour,” Scongack said. “We are proud to be a part of Bruce County and look forward to seeing the finished documentary.”
Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority
Bruce Power’s Environment and Sustainability Fund has donated $25,000 to a variety of Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority projects.
The projects will implement restorative and conservation practices in and around Bruce County waterways with the objective of improving and rehabilitating water quality and increasing populations of warmwater fish like muskie, pickerel and smallmouth and largemouth bass; and salmonids like steelhead and brook and brown trout.
Deterioration of water quality within these systems increases health and infrastructure costs, as they provide drinking water to many residents within the region, said Wayne Brohman, General Manager/Secretary-Treasurer for the SVCA. It also impacts the region’s recreational opportunities such as beach closures associated with E.coli and eutrophication, impacting the area’s tourism industry.
“These sponsorships will be an incredible boost to the implementation of local environmental projects, and Saugeen Conservation is extremely proud to partner with Bruce Power on conservation initiatives that will be felt for many generations,” said Brohman.
Francis Chua, Bruce Power’s Department Manager, Environment Management, said the company understands how important the SVCA’s watershed initiatives are for these sensitive habitats.
“Healthy waterways are integral to our quality of life in Bruce County,” Chua said. “Bruce Power is proud to support the SVCA in its vitally important work, and we know what it accomplishes today will benefit local residents far into the future.”
