The Me to We Committee at Northport Elementary School has been busy this year, from making stress balls for cancer patients to collecting toiletries for the Women’s House. The group meets once a week and is lead by Rebecca Woodley, Grade 5/6 teacher at the school.

“Many students want to get involved and are unsure how to help. Students have to write a mini essay to express why they want to be in the group in order to join the team,” wrote Woodley in an email to The Hub. “Selections are made off of past experience and desire to make a difference.”

Once the group is decided, they then discuss what they think is needed locally as well as globally and choose which areas on which to focus.

From the Me to We website, their vision is “to empower people to transform local and global communities by shifting from ‘me’ thinking to ‘we’ acting.”

In addition to stress balls and toiletries, the Northport group has been collecting milk bags which they will spend time making into carpets in the new year. As well, they have been collecting metal tabs for the Ronald McDonald house in London. “Some Ronald McDonald houses use the tabs to make into wheelchairs while others use the money from melting the tabs for activities and upkeep of the house,” said Woodley.
