Airport Washroom 2Saugeen District Secondary School students have recently completed a fully accessible washroom at the Port Elgin Airport. The Town of Saugeen Shores, the Airport Committee and SDSS teacher, Bud Halpin set up the hands-on project as part of the grade 11/12 Construction class. The students have been working hard on the project over the last few weeks and have done everything themselves from carpentry to plumbing, all under the supervision of Mr. Halpin and the guidance of the Building Department.

“This is a great experience for the students to learn life skills,” says Jayne Jagelewski, Director of Community Services. “They are putting into practice the skills they gained in the classroom, and the Town is thrilled to get students involved in projects like this, which in turn benefit the community.”

This is one of many projects on which the Town has partnered with the class. Over the last few years the SDSS Construction class has made many contributions to the community including work on the Fairy Lake Rotary Pavilion, the new boardwalks at the beaches in both Port Elgin and Southampton; as well as the Saugeen Rail Trial accessible trail head building.Airport Washroom
