Saugeen District Secondary School's 126th Annual Commencement took place on the evening of Friday, October 9.
Principal, Melissa McEwan welcomed everyone to the proceedings. “This evening marks a very special day in the educational journey of our students in their academic accomplishments,” she said. “In our busy lives there are moments in time where it is essential for us to pause, reflect and celebrate. Today is one of those days.”
McEwan said that Saugeen District Secondary School is seeped in tradition and high expectations. “Every fall we take the time to celebrate the academic accomplishments of our students,” she explained. “Graduates, I am proud of you.”
Councilor Sonya Roote gave greetings from Saugeen First Nation. “I just feel really overwhelmed. Tonight is a huge honour for me because there's so many kids that I've watched grow up,” she said. “I just feel so proud right now.”
Roote explained that Chief Vernon Roote wanted to attend the proceedings but was away on travel and sent his regrets. “I would just like to say congratulations on behalf of Saugeen Chief and Council.”
David Mason, Trustee with the Bluewater District School Board quoted author C. JoyBell C. “Some of you know where you're going and some of you may not know where you're going but it doesn't really matter as long as you spread your wings and let the winds carry you along.”
Hosts and Masters of Ceremony for the evening were Guidance Councilor Susan Dolphin and English teacher Shannon Ferguson.
