It was perfect weather for a fun filled family day at Mowbray's Canadian Tire in Port Elgin for their annual Jumpstart fundraising event on Saturday, May 28. The Canadian Tire charity raises funds which helps families enrol their children in sports who otherwise may not be able to. Saturday was the official kickoff day for Jumpstart Month across the country.
The event included a by-donation charity barbecue, which was manned by a team of volunteers, and a number of activities to interest all ages. Port Elgin's Canadian Martial Arts Centre was there demonstrating a variety of different martial arts techniques and maneuvers, while a number of Sauble Speedway drivers had brought their vehicles for the crowds to have a look over.
Jack and Tyler Middleton from the Ontario Blue Jays, a development team from the Canadian Premier Baseball League, were also at the event demonstrating some pitching skills and timing how fast members of the public could throw a baseball.
Eleanor Mowbray said that all the money they raise for Jumpstart stays within the community with 78 local children having benefitted in 2015. “In our area last year we actually gave $17,410 for local sports, that's what we dispersed out, so it was an average of $223 per child,” said Mowbray, explaining that Canadian Tire's community matching fund program helps increase the dollar amounts that they raise.
The total raised from Saturday's barbecue was $1,739, which Mowbray said will be converted to around $3,500 though the dollar matching program.
It was all smiles at Mowbray's Canadian Tire charity barbecue, May 28, which raised over $1,700 for Jumpstart. Left to right, Mike Mowbray, Max Mowbray, Gary Brown, Eleanor Mowbray, Olivia Little, Colton Heipel and Chad Little.
