Saugeen Shores Winterhawks defenceman Theo Peckham accepts the 2016/17 Top Defenceman Award from then-assistant coach Mark Kazarian on May 5, 2017.

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks announced the return of a former National Hockey League player on Monday.

The club signed defenceman Theo Peckham to a Level 1 card, in accordance with new WOAA Sr. Hockey League roster rules.

Peckham, 31, played nine seasons of professional hockey, including 160 games for the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL.

Following his pro career, Peckham played one season for the Winterhawks in 2016/17, scoring 15 points in 18 games, while providing physically dominant defensive play, culminating with winning the team’s Top Defenceman Award.

Peckham played the past two seasons with the Hamilton Steelhawks of Allan Cup Hockey.

“Theo is a huge addition to our team, he’s a proven leader and his talent speaks for itself,” said Head Coach Matt Turcotte. “We’re confident this puts us closer to our goal of winning a championship.”

Peckham will join the club when training camp opens on September 10th at The Plex in Port Elgin.

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks open the 2019/20 WOAA Sr. Hockey League regular season on the road in Kincardine on October 5th against the Ripley Wolves.
