peaches and Cream Ya jamming“Roller Derby is basically comprised into a bout (game) and it consists of Jams. Jams last two minutes or until called off by the lead Jammer,” explained Dame, Ashley Warner. Warner explained that there are different positions in the team including the Jammer, whose main goal is to go around the track and collect points; blockers and a Pivot. The Pivot is the only blocker who is allowed to accept a star pass from the Jammer. The aim being to get through the opposition's pack of blockers and score points.

“It's fun, it's exciting and we're always looking for volunteers to help,” said Warner. “This will be a good event to bring awareness, get some support and then help get some money as renting arenas is expensive.”

The Highland Dames' colours are orange and blue. “We have orange and blue tops. We're the Highland Dames so we have little blue kilts too.” Warner added that they used the Nova Scotia tartan and that the players have game names as well, including T.R.U.C.K, VolKAYno, Sloane Painful and Scary Queen. Her own name being Broom Kilda.

The event, sponsored by The Wismer House in Port Elgin and G&M Electrical & Mechanical in Sauble Beach, starts with game one at 5 p.m. while game 2 gets underway at 7 p.m. Doors open at 4pm.

Tickets are $10 and are available at the door, at The Wismer House or from a Grey Bruce Roller Derby member. Kids under 10 are free. The event is licensed and an after party will be held at The Wismer House.
