Saugeen Shores Council have given their approval for the 2022 Ontario Mens Tankard to be hosted by the Port Elgin Curling Club February 9 to 13, 2022 at the Plex in Port Elgin.

In a Port Elgin Curling Club media release, the winner of the Ontario Mens Tankard will go on to represent the southern part of the province for the 2022 Tim Hortons Brier which is being held in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Past Tankard champions have included the teams of Glenn Howard (10 times), Russ Howard (eight times), Paul Savage (five times), Wayne Middaugh (three times), and John Epping.

More than 200 volunteers will be needed to run the event and while there are more than 40 curling clubs within an hour of Port Elgin, volunteers do not need to be members of an area club.

“We have been awarded the 2022 Tankard plus our annual Superspiel is going to become a sponsored World Curling Tour event," said Steering Committee Chair Doug Flowers. "We as a community have all of the ingredients to attract other curling events and all of the benefits from them," Flowers added.

This Saturday, February 27, is Curling Day in Canada and special events will be held throughout the day at the Port Elgin club including the official launch event of the 2022 Ontario Tankard.
